JCWE editor’s collaborative project wins 2026 James Harvey Robinson Prize for Teaching Aids

The American Historical Association awarded its 2026 James Harvey Robinson Prize to Kate Masur and Liz Clarke for Freedom Was in Sight!: A Graphic History of Reconstruction in the Washington, DC, Region (University of North Carolina Press, 2024); teachers Jon Elfner and Krystal Davis (Homewood Flossmoor High School) created supplemental online materials for the book.

A vividly illustrated account of how the second founding unfolded within the nation’s capital, Freedom Was in Sight! draws on the words and experiences of people who lived during Reconstruction and powerfully narrates how the impacts of emancipation and the civil war rippled outward for decades.

The James Harvey Robinson Prize is awarded biennially for the teaching aid which has made the most outstanding contribution to the teaching and learning of history in any field for public or educational purposes. The Robinson Prize was established in 1974 by Council and first offered in 1978.

Congratulations to Kate Masur, Liz Clarke, Jon Elfner and Krystal Davis for their achievement!
